Bio

Clinical Associate Professor Wong Hon Tym is the Clinical Director of the Centre for Healthcare Innovation.

A/Prof Wong was the Pro-Tem Chief of the Ophthalmology Dept of Woodlands Health Campus from 2018 to 2020. He was also the Medical Director of National Healthcare Group Eye Institute from 2011 to 2022. He was a Senior Consultant in Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Ophthalmology Dept which he headed from 2007 to 2016. He is a member of the hospital’s Medical Board. His other appointments as Critical Incident Manager and Open Communication instructor reflect his keen interest in patient communication. He is also a member of the hospital’s Digital Transformation Council since 1 Oct 2020.

From 2008-2015, he headed NHG 1-Health, an ambulatory centre, and helmed the design and practice of streamlined cataract surgery. Other breakthrough models of care co-led by A/Prof Wong include tele-ophthalmology and the Community Eye Clinics, both of which received TTSH’s Milestone Awards.

A/Prof Wong obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and his Master’s degree in Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 1999. He was subsequently awarded Singapore’s Ministry of Health Manpower Development Programme scholarship in 2002, and underwent his clinical fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UK, focusing on optic nerve head imaging, and has published in major peer-reviewed journals and been presented at conferences such as ARVO.

A/Prof Wong plays an active role in training & education, garnering multiple Best Teacher awards. He has mentored four fellows and has been a course instructor at AAO, EGS and WGC meetings.

His major awards include the Excellent Service Star Award (2006), the Distinguished Service Award for Eye and Vision Health (2013) & the National Healthcare Group Outstanding Citizenship Award (2014). As co-chairman of the Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Programme, his team won the National Medical Excellence Award (2019). He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Guide Dogs Singapore since 2017.
