A demographical study of Covid19 cases diagnosed at Woodlands polyclinic from March 2020 to July 2020

Background & Hypothesis

With the onset of the Covid19 Pandemic in Jan 2020, the first Covid19 case was detected on 23.1.202. First case at Woodlands polyclinic was detected on18.3.2021 when Singapore already had 266 cases.

Majority of the cases in Singapore were male foreign workers in younger age group. We wanted to study of the trend in Woodlands polyclinic to compare with the national trend.

Methods

Data from NHGP Information and Analysis Department and Operations department of Woodlands polyclinic was retrieved and analyzed.

Results

A total of 89 cases where detected during the study period.

88% were males and 12 % females.

Majority- 76% were male foreigner workers. The national average showed similar trends.

Age wise distribution; majority- 46 % of the cases, were in the age group of 21 to 31 years of age.

Followed by the patients in the age group of 31 to 40 years of age (22%).

73% of the cases were diagnosed in Apr 2020 followed by a decrease to 10% in May 2020 and gradually declined by Jul 2020.

Discussion & Conclusion

The increase in number of cases were most during the month of April 2020 and were foreign workers staying in dormitories. The national average showed similar trend with 926 cases on 31.3.2021 and 17101 cases by 1.5.2020.

The new cases detected at Woodlands showed a decreasing trend in May 2020 with announcement of the Circuit Breaker on 17.4.2020. The cases detected at Woodlands polyclinic declined substantially as the foreign workers were swabbed actively at the Swab and Isolation Facilities (SIF).
